Today most media content is consumed based on algorithmic recommendations. Evidence suggests that this can lead to politically biased media consumption patterns. Automated extraction of political agendas from texts can reveal and analyze political biases in online media -- and thus help fostering politically unbiased media consumption. Here we employ modern political text analysis methods demonstrating the potential of automated fine-grained political bias analysis in online media. We conduct an analysis of political content in German language online media during the period 2019--2022, encompassing several million articles and tweets covering events with profound societal impact globally and nationally, the COVID-19 pandemic and the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Our analysis identifies thematic similarity between national (German and Swiss) reporting, particularly for categories driven by international events. We also find divergences emerging in domestically influenced categories, reflecting differences in national policies and institutional structures. A comparison of newspaper and Twitter discourse reveals that both media converge around a shared core during the pandemic, yet differ in intensity and temporal dynamics. Newspapers exhibit more stable political content, while Twitter reacts through short-lived event-driven spikes. These findings indicate that international crises act as a powerful synchronizing force on political content in classical media, temporarily overriding both national and media-form differences. Our automated political analysis empowers citizens by rendering political agendas in online media transparent. This transparency also enables media outlets to bridge the gap between algorithm-driven echo chambers and a more informed, balanced public discourse.
We perform the largest known computational analysis of Canadian news narratives about police-involved deaths, spanning 4,000 articles from the last quarter-century. We develop a novel computational model, PerspectiveGap, grounded in prior sociological work on media representation of policing. We find that reporting on police-involved deaths on average features perspectives from state bureaucrats at a rate nearly three times as much as perspectives from other members of the public, including relatives, community members, eyewitnesses, lawyers representing the family, or civil liberties groups. A considerable fraction of articles contain no points of view from civilian actors, though civilian representation has increased in recent years. Qualitatively, we find that state bureaucrats' accounts of these deaths tend to be clinical and procedural, while civilian discourse carries considerably more emotional valence. The PerspectiveGap framework developed here can be contextualized to other jurisdictions, offering a scalable approach for analyzing how media systems construct narratives around policing and accountability.
Public discourse on AI has become polarized; exaggerated positions on AI in traditional and social media threaten the development of AI Literacy among the general public. In this article, I introduce the VET Framework, a method for categorizing AI discourse along the dimensions of valence, effectiveness, and trajectory. I show how this framework can be used to identify, compare, and critique prevalent narratives of AI Hype, AI Doom, AI Denial, and AI Normalcy. Using VET, I analyze how each of these four stances exaggerates some aspects of the current state and/or likely evolution of AI, and illustrate how the VET framework can serve as an AI Literacy tool by supporting the ``vetting'' of polarized AI discourse.

Media coverage influences disaster response, yet the drivers of international media attention to local events remain unevenly understood. Brazil offers a compelling case: some of its natural and technological disasters occasionally hit the international headlines. However, systematic analyses of what makes these events be discussed abroad are still missing. Addressing this gap requires representative, validated and country-specific news datasets. This paper presents a peak analysis of 2k news about Brazilian fires and landslides in German newspapers from 2000 to 2024. Using time series segmentation to detect news event peaks, we examine the extent to which they can be temporally aligned with observations in national and global disaster databases.
