Online health information seeking is shifting from keyword search, where users consider a ranked list of links, to conversational systems that compose a single answer and curate its citations. Source evaluation therefore passes from user to platform, yet what these systems surface is poorly characterized. We audited three free consumer products (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview) on twenty English mental health questions under two prompt conditions, with a subset of three also translated into six further languages of varying resource tiers. We recorded 15,942 citations across 1,140 responses and 1,713 unique domains, then classified every citation with a nine-category organizational typology applied by a deterministic classifier validated against human coding. Citations were heavily concentrated: the ten most-cited domains accounted for 43.6% of English citations, and government, commercial health, and academic sources were closely matched at roughly 22% each. Platforms differed little in typical citation volume but sharply in consistency and in the source types they favored. Explicitly requesting sources shifted composition only modestly. Non-English queries surfaced fewer citations and were routed to language-appropriate resources at significantly lower rates. We release the typology, classifier, and annotated corpus as reusable instruments for auditing generative health search.
While gender and racial biases in language models have been widely studied, anti-LGBTQ biases remain underexplored, particularly beyond English. Existing benchmarks often do not capture cultural and linguistic variation and rely on gender representations. This paper introduces a multilingual German-English benchmark dataset for the evaluation of anti-LGBTQ biases in language models. It combines community-sourced stereotypes from German-speaking queer individuals with a German translation of WinoQueer. The data is used to evaluate eight language models across sizes and architectures and explore mitigation through fine-tuning on community and progressive media content. Results show that language models reproduce anti-queer stereotypes, with variation across identities and models. Differences between the translated and community-based data highlight the importance of cultural adaptation for multilingual bias evaluation. Fine-tuning reduces bias on average, but not consistently across models and identities. Warning: This text contains examples of anti-queer hateful language and stereotypes.
Mental health disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet Natural Language Processing (NLP) research for mental healthcare has remained concentrated in high-income, English-language settings. North Africa, and Algeria in particular, is largely absent from this literature despite its unique linguistic, historical, and healthcare context. We present the first conceptual framework examining the potential role of NLP within Algeria's mental healthcare system. Drawing on narrative synthesis of global NLP mental health research, Algerian healthcare literature, and low-resource NLP methodologies, we identify four structural barriers to mental healthcare: the language-of-care gap, geographic inequities in access, stigma-related barriers to help-seeking, and the absence of research and digital infrastructure. We then map existing NLP capabilities to each barrier, outlining their potential applications, implementation constraints, and the technical, institutional, and governance requirements necessary for deployment. Based on this analysis, we propose a research and policy roadmap that prioritizes data resources, multilingual language technologies, evaluation frameworks, and regulatory capacity. Although grounded in the Algerian context, the framework addresses challenges common to many multilingual, low-resource, and post-colonial settings. This work provides a foundation for future research on culturally and linguistically appropriate NLP for mental healthcare and offers a practical roadmap for developing responsible AI-enabled mental health systems in underrepresented regions.

Automated analyses of privacy policies enable large-scale assessments of transparency in digital ecosystems, yet existing auditing pipelines remain predominantly English-centric. This limits their ability to systematically evaluate multilingual environments, as in the European Union, where many services disclose privacy practices only in local languages. This paper examines whether large language models (LLMs) can extend privacy policy analysis beyond English without requiring language-specific adaptation, thus empowering large-scale auditing in linguistically diverse app ecosystems. We assemble an evaluation corpus spanning all 24 official EU languages from translated versions of two established expert-annotated datasets (OPP-115 and MAPP) and assess translation fidelity through automated metrics and targeted legal-expert review. Our LLM-based classifier for identifying categories of personal data collection achieves stable cross-lingual performance, with macro-F1 scores ranging between 0.91 and 0.94. We then leverage this capability in a large-scale audit of 2,611 Android applications from the Spanish Google Play Store. Combining multilingual privacy policy analysis with the evaluation of corresponding privacy labels and runtime network traffic exposes an important linguistic barrier: public-sector apps predominantly provide privacy policies in Spanish, whereas popular commercial apps mostly provide them in English. We reveal systematic discrepancies between declared and observed practices, especially in public-sector apps. Overall, our results indicate how English-only privacy audits can systematically obfuscate transparency gaps in multilingual environments.
Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in multilingual settings, yet the energy costs of serving these models across different languages remain poorly understood. We present a systematic study of inference energy consumption across languages with ML.Energy framework (Chung et al., 2026). We find striking disparities: energy consumption per output token varies by up to 8.3 times across languages, while total energy for a fixed set of requests varies by up to 179 times between the cheapest (English, 17.6 kJ) and the most expensive (Pashto, 3,147 kJ) languages. Our analysis shows that this disparity is driven by two compounding factors: (1) higher per-token energy costs for languages using complex or rare scripts, and (2) more tokens generated for low-resource languages. Moreover, we find a double cost + performance penalty: languages with the highest energy footprints also tend to achieve the lowest task accuracy. We reveal that the energy divide persists across models, hardware, and tasks, suggesting a systemic energy inequity in multilingual LLM deployment. Finally, we recommend that the community treat energy as a first-class evaluation axis, extend reporting checklists and model cards to include it, and adopt deployment-side mitigations for better energy efficiency.
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used, including in political applications, but their political fairness has been little studied. We assess it using perplexity, posing that a fair model should give equal probability to all political groups. However, we find, across ten LLMs and three datasets covering 37 languages, that LLMs are more perplexed by the texts of far right and nationalist parties than of social-democratic parties. We find this to be consistent with previous work on translation fairness, to the point that perplexity correlates with downstream translation metrics. Our method is applicable to both base LLMs as well as their instruction-tuned counterpart, and we find that both are highly correlated, suggesting that the political fairness of LLMs stems from their pretraining, and is hardly affected by instruction-tuning.
