Digital platforms commonly optimize for satisfaction using signals such as ratings, likes, and sentiment, implicitly treating satisfaction as a proxy for user well-being. Psychological theory, however, characterizes well-being as a multidimensional construct that extends beyond satisfaction or short-term positivity. In this paper, we examine whether commonly used satisfaction signals capture expressions of well-being, and what types of content are associated with different well-being outcomes. Our study focuses on book consumption, a convenient domain wherein users engage substantially with fixed pieces of content and sometimes provide nuanced long-form feedback. Our results show that (a) rating scales and sentiment only loosely correlate with most facets of psychological well-being and (b) ratings and sentiment are more closely aligned with immediate and hedonic as opposed to enduring and eudaimonic expressions of well-being. Further, by linking reviews to book content, we find that themes related to values, and institutions like religion (Pearson r = 0.35) or human drives (r=.26) are associated with higher meaning and accomplishment respectively, while incivility (avg r = -.15) and past-focused language (avg r = -.12) are associated with lower well-being. These findings motivate richer outcome targets for content recommendation systems beyond satisfaction alone.
Large language models (LLMs) are becoming a major way for consumers to find products, but we do not yet understand how brands compete in this new channel. We study brand dynamics in LLM recommendations using skincare products -- a category where consumers cannot easily judge quality before buying and must rely on brand reputation -- across three commercial LLMs (GPT-4o-mini, Claude Sonnet, Gemini 3 Flash), with a robustness check on search goods. In three experiments, we find: (1) a Conditional Monopoly where well-known brands get recommended 100% of the time (IAI = 10.0) when all products have the same specifications, but this dominance disappears with less than a +0.1-star rating advantage for a competitor; (2) authority-style marketing language, including fabricated clinical-evidence claims, breaks this monopoly at a Bias Surplus Value equal to +0.17 rating points, with each model responding differently; and (3) a social dilemma in multi-brand GEO competition: when all brands adopt the same optimization strategy, individual payoff falls from +0.802 to +0.007 in our payoff proxy, and non-participating brands receive zero recommendations in our tests. Our results suggest that generative engine optimization (GEO) should be studied not only as a security risk, but also as an emerging marketing practice that shapes market competition.
Travelers increasingly ask large language model (LLM) assistants which hotel to book, making these systems gatekeepers of property visibility -- yet what moves their recommendations is undocumented. We conduct a pre-specified algorithm audit using a randomized choice-based conjoint: across personas, prompt templates, and twelve open-weight and proprietary models, assistants choose among five hotels whose guest rating, review volume and recency, management response, chain affiliation, price, eco-certification, and list position are independently randomized. We estimate the average marginal component effect of each signal on the probability of recommendation. Guest rating and price dominate (a top rating raises selection by 31.6 percentage points; a high price lowers it by 30.0), reproducing human valence-and-price primacy but over-weighting eco-certification and ignoring management response. List position -- a content-free artifact -- shifts recommendations causally, worth about \$12 per night. Stated reasons track revealed weights imperfectly. The findings ground generative engine optimization and the accountability of AI infomediaries in causal evidence.

We investigate linguistic biases in LLM-based restaurant and product recommendations given prompts varying across Southern American English (AE), Indian English (IE), and Code-Switched Hindi-English dialects, using the Yelp Open dataset (Yelp Inc., 2023) and Walmart product reviews dataset (PromptCloud,2020). We add lists of restaurant and product names balanced by cuisine type and product category to the prompts given to the LLM, and we zero-shot prompt the LLMs in a cold-start setting to select the top-20 restaurant and product recommendations from these lists for each of the dialect-varied prompts. We prompt LLMs using different list samples across 20 seeds for better generalization, and aggregate per cuisine-type and per category response counts for each seed, question/prompt, and LLM model. We run mixed-effects regression models for each model family and topic (restaurant/product) with the aggregate response counts as the dependent, and conduct likelihood ratio tests for the fixed effects with post-hoc pairwise testing of estimated marginal means differences, to investigate group-level differences in recommendation counts by model size and dialect type. Results show that dialect plays a role in the type of restaurant selected across the models tested with the mistral-small-3.1 model and both the llama-3.1 family models tested showing more sensitivity to Indian English and Code-Switched prompts. In terms of product recommendations, the llama-3.1-70B-model is particularly sensitive to Code-Switched prompts in four out of seven categories, and more beauty and home category recommendations are seen when using the Indian English and Code-Switched prompts for larger and smaller models, respectively. No broad trends are seen in the model-size based differences, with differing recommendations based on model sizes conditioned by the type of dialect.
