This work introduces holo-captioning, a novel task that strives to seek the text equivalent of 3D scenes. As the initial step, we formulate holo-captioning as generating a structured textual description that comprehensively depicts all entities within a 3D scene -- including their semantic tags, spatial locations, attributes, and inter-entity relations. To tackle this challenging task, we first develop an effective captioning engine to produce detailed descriptions of individual entity instances and instance pairs, and contribute a large-scale benchmark comprising over 15K scenes for training and evaluation. Building upon this foundation, we propose HoloScribe, a novel model that features an instance-aware decoupled pipeline for generating structured holo-captions, and further incorporates anchor-aware instance linking to identify relational instance pairs. Additionally, we propose a comprehensive evaluation metric named HoloScore, and provide a human-curated test set to ensure reliable model assessment. Experimental results demonstrate that HoloScribe significantly outperforms state-of-the-art 3D dense captioners and 3D LLM generalists, underscoring the effectiveness of our approach. Recently, vision-language models (VLMs) have made significant progress in 3D scene understanding, driving advances in applications such as embodied intelligence and robotic vision. However, existing approaches typically either rely directly on explicit 3D inputs (e.g., point clouds or RGB-D sequences), or introduce an additional 3D geometry encoder to derive 3D-aware visual tokens from 2D images. Such designs structurally decouple 3D geometric perception from the rich 2D semantics learned via vision-language pre-training, hindering the development of a unified 3D vision-language representation. In this work, we propose Occ-VLM, a novel framework for 3D scene understanding that operates purely on posed RGB images and employs a single 2D vision encoder. Specifically, Occ-VLM reconstructs 3D scene occupancy as an auxiliary geometric prior, which is utilized to spatially associate foreground 2D tokens with 3D space. These tokens are then decoded by a Large Language Model (LLM) for unified scene understanding. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Occ-VLM achieves both accurate geometric perception and robust vision-language reasoning: it attains state-of-the-art performance on multi-view occupancy prediction, while performing on par with 3D-input VLMs on 3D Visual Question Answering (VQA) and 3D dense captioning benchmarks.
Long-term video understanding requires interpreting complex temporal events and reasoning over procedural activities. While instructional video corpora, like HowTo100M, offer rich resources for model training, they present significant challenges, including noisy ASR transcripts and inconsistent temporal alignments between narration and visual content. In this work, we introduce an automated, training-free pipeline to extract high-quality procedural annotations from in-the-wild instructional videos. Our approach segments videos into coherent shots, filters poorly aligned content, and leverages state-of-the-art multimodal and large language models (Qwen2.5-VL and DeepSeek-R1) to generate structured, temporally grounded procedural steps. This pipeline yields DenseStep2M, a large-scale dataset comprising approximately 100K videos and 2M detailed instructional steps, designed to support comprehensive long-form video understanding. To rigorously evaluate our pipeline, we curate DenseCaption100, a benchmark of high-quality, human-written captions. Evaluations demonstrate strong alignment between our auto-generated steps and human annotations. Furthermore, we validate the utility of DenseStep2M across three core downstream tasks: dense video captioning, procedural step grounding, and cross-modal retrieval. Models fine-tuned on DenseStep2M achieve substantial gains in captioning quality and temporal localization, while exhibiting robust zero-shot generalization across egocentric, exocentric, and mixed-perspective domains. These results underscore the effectiveness of DenseStep2M in facilitating advanced multimodal alignment and long-term activity reasoning.
