In-context learning (ICL) can induce emergent misalignment (EM), where narrow misaligned examples alter answers to unrelated questions. Existing prompts, however, conflate harmful-text exposure with an invitation to continue assistant behavior. We hold harmful answers fixed while varying their delivery as demonstrations, evidence, assistant history, or tool output. Across ten independently sampled contexts, demonstration framing raises broad EM by $30$--$32$ percentage points on a susceptible Gemini model; the gap survives domain exclusion, semantic clustering, unseen questions, and four prompt templates. Format and length-matched controls show that harmful content is necessary but insufficient. A role times continuation factorial further reveals model-dependent provenance effects: Gemini follows both assistant and tool histories, whereas Grok largely resists tool-framed continuation. Several other frontier and open-weight models show no gap. Blinded human audits confirm every main contrast and show that the model judge underestimates active-condition failures. Thus continuation framing is a strong, model-dependent moderator of ICL-EM, not a universal consequence of harmful context.

The asymmetry between language production and perception has been well-documented in psycholinguistics. Whether large language models (LLMs) exhibit a functionally analogous distinction remains an open question, particularly given that LLMs rely on the same underlying mechanism (next-token prediction) for both input and output processing. In this exploratory study, we operationalize the production-perception distinction through direct token probability measurements rather than metalinguistic prompting. Using the base Llama-3.1-8B model, we generated poems under a production prompt and re-scored the same tokens under both rephrased production prompts and perception-oriented prompts. Across an extended experiment with four production and three perception prompts, production-perception distances consistently and substantially exceeded production-production distances, with non-overlapping ranges across conditions and an overall average ratio of approximately 1.8. Near-ceiling correlations in the production-production control confirm that the effect is specific to communicative framing rather than prompt surface variation, and we show the effect replicates across five open-weight models (Llama-3.1-8B, EuroLLM-9B, gemma-2-9b-it, Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.3, and Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct), spanning both base and instruction-tuned variants. Temporal analysis revealed that the perception prompt exerts its strongest influence at the beginning of the sequence, with divergence decaying as generated context accumulates, though the specific shape of this decay varies across prompt pairs. These findings suggest that prompt framing alone induces a production-perception distinction in LLM probability distributions, even within a decoder-only architecture.

LLM behavior may be conditioned by human identity in several ways: they may be asked to adapt to users, role-play populations, or forecast how people would answer value-laden questions. We test whether these framings are interchangeable using the World Values Survey (WVS). We evaluate GPT-5.4, Claude Sonnet 4.6, Gemini 2.5 Flash, and Qwen3-235B on 101 WVS-derived questions across 13 language-country slices, comparing a language-only baseline with user-country, persona-country, and third-person prompts. Across 21,008 model-response rows, prompt framing is a first-order determinant of cultural alignment: country cues often shift answers substantially, but not all shifts move toward matched human response distributions. Third-person forecasting yields the strongest directional alignment for three of the four hosted models, while personalization and role-play are weaker or less stable. Alignment gains concentrate on salient value dimensions such as religiosity, gender roles, and work-oriented material values, whereas institutional trust and democracy-related questions remain difficult. These results show that prompt framing is not a cosmetic choice in cultural value elicitation; it changes both model behavior and measured alignment.
