This study reports the development of an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system in Mizo, a low-resource language. The development included collecting 17.62 hours of speech data, curating it, and fine-tuning the Mizo ASR system with three Whisper multilingual models and with the SraVaani 1.0 Indic multilingual model. Whisper-large-v3 achieved the lowest conventional WER (18.08%), while morphology-aware evaluation yielded a WER of 7.22%. Zero-shot evaluation of the SraVaani 1.0 Indic multilingual model yielded a WER of 58.27%, while Mizo-specific fine-tuning reduced the conventional WER to 29.45% and the morphology-aware WER to 17.93%. The results demonstrate that the Whisper model can achieve a substantially low WER, even when adapted to an unseen language. In contrast, SraVaani 1.0 supports the Mizo language in its multilingual model; however, fine-tuning with carefully curated Mizo speech data substantially improves its performance.

Religious radio is a widespread but understudied form of mass communication in the United States, and content-level analysis of it has been constrained by the absence of large-scale transcript data. This Data Descriptor presents a corpus of transcribed English-language religious radio broadcasts captured from live webstreams over a one-month period in July 2025. Fifteen-minute segments were recorded on a rolling schedule from 785 distinct streams, which together rebroadcast the signals of more than two thousand AM and FM stations, yielding over 700,000 recordings and more than 60 million diarized lines of speech. Each recording was transcribed and speaker-diarized with an automated pipeline, and segmented and labeled by programming format and topic using a large language model. The corpus is organized as linked tables of stream metadata, recording metadata, and transcript lines. It supports descriptive study of religious broadcasting across regions and traditions, analysis of how social and political issues are discussed in religious media, and speech-processing research in an underrepresented domain.
State-of-the-art speech datasets predominantly focus on widely spoken languages, often overlooking low-resource languages such as Luxembourgish, which remain underrepresented in speech technology research. In this work, we introduce LuxEmo, a 21-hour conversational expressive speech corpus for Luxembourgish with 4 emotion categories. LuxEmo is derived from Radio Télévision Luxembourg (RTL) youth broadcasts, using automated detection followed by human validation. We propose a semi-automatic curation workflow combining voice activity detection, denoising, language identification, LuxASR-based segmentation, automatic emotion prediction, lexical cues, and targeted human review. Additionally, we benchmark five expressive TTS systems covering German-based cross-lingual transfer, multilingual Luxembourgish support, Luxembourgish adaptation, and non-parametric prosody transfer. Performance is evaluated using both objective metrics and human evaluation.
We introduce the Transmasculine Attitudes and Speech Corpus (TMASC), a multimodal corpus of 196 transmasculine individuals, including questionnaire responses and 66 audio recordings. The questionnaire includes items exploring the vocal health of transmasculine individuals. The audio recordings include cough and throat-clearing samples, a reading passage, and additional session-specific questions. This paper outlines the development of this corpus and the data collection procedures. To illustrate the utility of this corpus, we present three case studies demonstrating how this crowd-sourced multimodal corpus can be used to support transmasculine individuals. These include the integration of perceptual and acoustic data, the identification of group-level characteristics, and the calibration of acoustic measurements.
We present BaltiVoice, a 16.8-hour read-speech corpus for Balti (ISO 639-3: bft), a Tibetic language spoken in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, with no prior publicly available ASR resources. The corpus contains 10,060 validated utterances in native Nastaliq script, derived from Mozilla Common Voice recordings. Fine-tuning OpenAI Whisper-small yields a Word Error Rate (WER) of 26.74% and a Character Error Rate (CER) of 8.67% on a 538-utterance speaker-disjoint validation set, down from a zero-shot baseline of 159.19% WER and 152.52% CER. A Whisper-base fine-tuned on the same data achieves 44.54% WER and 15.61% CER, confirming that model capacity matters for this low-resource setting. The dataset, fine-tuned model, and a live transcription demo are publicly available on HuggingFace.
