Emotional Support Conversation (ESC) systems aim to provide holistic support by balancing professional therapeutic competence with natural empathy. However, existing methods struggle to simultaneously achieve structured, stage-aware reasoning and seamless empathy-expertise alignment, often resulting in an artificial splicing of clinical strategies and generic reassurance. To overcome these limitations, we propose ESCRAG-R1, a unified framework that integrates retrieval-based psychological guidance into Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). By incorporating retrieval into the reinforcement learning loop, ESCRAG-R1 transforms external knowledge into a robust learning signal that stimulates explicit internal reasoning prior to generation and fundamentally reshapes the model's internal policy. To provide the reliable supervision required for this optimization, we construct ESC-Preference, a high-quality dataset based on a Client--Counselor--Judge evaluation framework that delivers precise, empathy-aware reward signals. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ESCRAG-R1 significantly outperforms existing baselines by mitigating superficial splicing and realizing a natural integration of professional guidance and empathetic expression. Long-term emotional-support agents require memory mechanisms for personalized understanding across sessions. However, emotional-support dialogue is often low-density: turns are incomplete, evidence is scattered, and user states evolve over time. Existing memory methods usually rely on fixed units, such as turn-level notes or session summaries, which may lose details or introduce redundant noise. We propose FTA-Mem, a structured memory framework for low-density long-term dialogue. FTA-Mem uses Boundary-preserving Window Segmentation (BWS) to form coherent situation fragments, and constructs Fact-Time-Affect Memory Units (FTA Units) that jointly encode factual content, temporal grounding, and affective context. Retrieved units are then synthesized into structured context for answer generation. Experiments on ES-MemEval and LoCoMo show that FTA-Mem improves overall long-term memory question answering across benchmarks with different information-density characteristics. On ES-MemEval, FTA-Mem achieves 0.3871 F1 and 0.6668 BERTScore. Further analysis shows that situation-level FTA construction better balances evidence preservation and construction cost than coarse session-level or overly fine-grained turn-pair construction, providing an effective granularity trade-off for long-term dialogue memory.
Emotional Support (ES) systems have long optimized a single objective: alleviating the user's emotional distress in the moment. We argue that a complementary need, helping users see themselves more clearly, defines a distinct paradigm we call Personality Support (PS). PS is not counseling or clinical intervention: it targets cognitive clarity and self-articulation, not symptom relief or diagnosis. We instantiate this paradigm in three layers. First, we present DSD, a Chinese self-discovery PS Dataset of 8,590 samples collected through real longitudinal interaction across five minimal units, Coach, Warm, Tsukkomi, Real, and Gonzo. Second, we build DeepSupport, a multi-persona PS system trained with OrthoTune, a PS-tailored framework with style-specific adapters and a style-consistency regularizer. Third, we unify the five DeepSupport personas into Ekova, a persistent personality-support agent with a unified cross-session memory layer, supporting both adaptive routing and user-customized persona selection. Experiments show that OrthoTune-trained models outperform all baselines with an average relative gain of 16.3% across all metrics over the strongest prompt-based baseline. As mental health concerns continue to rise globally, social media has emerged as a vital space where individuals seek emotional support. While prior work on personalized emotional support has leveraged seekers' emotional states, personas, and situational context, these approaches primarily capture the seeker's current state, overlooking the formative experiences that shape present concerns. In this work, we propose MindTailor, a framework that generates personalized emotional support responses by constructing a case formulation from the seeker's post history and iteratively refining responses through collaborative critique among counselor agents grounded in distinct counseling strategies. To enable research on this history-aware task, we construct ReddiSupp, a dataset of 798 Reddit posts paired with seekers' prior post histories. Through LLM-as-a-Judge evaluation, expert human evaluation, and a user study with seekers, we demonstrate that MindTailor outperforms baselines across these evaluations, improving empathy, personalization, understanding, and achieving the highest overall preference.
Emotional validation - explicitly acknowledging that a user's feelings make sense - has proven therapeutic value but has received little computational attention. Emotional validation in dialogue systems can be decomposed into (i) validating response identification, (ii) validation timing detection, and (iii) validating response generation. To support research on all three subtasks, we release M-EDESConv, a 120k English-Japanese multilingual corpus created through hybrid manual and automatic annotation, and M-TESC, a multilingual spoken-dialogue test set. For timing detection, we propose MEGUMI, a Multilingual Emotion-aware Gated Unit for Mutual Integration, that fuses frozen XLM-RoBERTa semantics with language-specific emotion encoders via cross-modal attention and gated fusion. MEGUMI shows superior performance on both the M-EDESConv and M-TESC datasets, both objectively and subjectively. Finally, our EmoValidBench benchmarks of GPT-4.1 Nano and Llama-3.1 8B indicate that current LLMs generate contextually similar and diverse validating responses, but emotional understanding remains a major area for improvement. Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used for emotional support tasks, such as negative thought reframing. This task relies on modifying cognitive appraisals, the subjective interpretation of events that elicit negative emotions, which is typically conceptualized along multiple discrete dimensions. Current LLM-based frameworks model cognitive appraisal by exhaustively evaluating all possible dimensions, but they fail to account for the varying saliency of these dimensions across different contexts. In this work, we investigate a vital yet overlooked question: "Can LLMs infer the salient appraisal dimensions from emotional support conversations?" To address this question, we introduce the AppraiSal benchmark, containing 996 emotional support conversations with human-annotated mental states, including salient cognitive appraisal dimensions. Furthermore, we propose PRISM, a multi-agent probabilistic framework grounded in Bayesian Inverse Planning, designed to improve LLMs' ability to identify context-specific appraisal dimensions. Experimental results show that PRISM brings improvements to LLMs across various sizes, particularly in identifying the most salient appraisal dimensions.
